Hab 12 (Scrapyard Ship Book 2) by Mark Wayne McGinnis Book Review

Hab 12 Hab 12

By: Mark Wayne McGinnis

This is the second book in the scrapyard ship series, and it picks up where scrapyard ship ends.  This book diverges from the well known plot of the first book, and makes use of some of the discoveries made by the crew in the first adventure as plot devices in this one.

My only complaint about this book is that Captain Reynolds tends to shift between being a very caring person when dealing with his family, to being very cold when members of his crew die.  This could be explained by him having a command persona, but the transition is not done as well as it could be and it was a little bit jarring to me.  For the most part however, the action is quick enough that you can move past any little issues like that quickly.

In this story after putting down a rebellion among the Craing POW's from the first book Captain Reynolds discovers that the Craing have found some very advanced warships made with the same technology as his ship.  In order to stop them coming to earth to avenge their lost fleet he must somehow get to the Craing homeworld, and wreck their wormhole nexus.  At first this seems to be an insurmountable problem, but it turns out that the "Zoo" that came as part of his ship is series of habitats consisting of enclosed universes that still have links to their home worlds.  Hab 12 happens to house pre-historic Craing so if the ancient zoo can be hacked he may just have a way to get there after all.  The problem is that getting through a landscape from the pre-historic Craing homeworld is easier said than done.  Add to this the fact that while the captain is leading this commando raid his crew is running into major problems of their own in the form of a Craing saboteur on board.  The ships AI is being slowly subverted causing all sorts of problems.  It seems that even if the Craing raid is successful the Captain may not have much of a ship to get back to, and without his ship Earth will be defenseless.

As with the first book this one will appeal mainly to military, and space adventure science fiction fans.

This book can be found as an e-book or in print at www.amazon.com.
